There are songs that speak about emotion as though it were entirely inward, hidden behind language and inaccessible to the senses. Burning Colors does something more unsettling. It repeatedly gives emotion a body. Color burns. Wind touches skin. A face carries traces of the previous night. A body becomes a flame. And near the end of the song, one of its most arresting images appears: the speaker declares, “Until I made a magic staff from my skin.”
