Some love songs begin with a dramatic confession, a painful goodbye or the memory of a relationship that has already ended. Malcolm Todd's Earrings begins with something much smaller: a misplaced personal object and the emotional uncertainty surrounding it. Yet that simplicity is precisely what makes the song so effective. Instead of announcing heartbreak in grand terms, Todd allows an ordinary detail to reveal the fragile condition of a relationship in which communication has become difficult.
