Many love songs try to persuade listeners that romance is exciting because it is dramatic, unstable or larger than life. Alex Warren’s Ordinary moves in almost the opposite direction. It suggests that love becomes truly extraordinary not by escaping daily life, but by filling daily life with unexpected radiance. The title appears modest at first. To call something “ordinary” is usually to downplay it. Yet the song uses that word ironically. What seems ordinary from the outside can become almost sacred from within when it is transformed by devotion.
